Chopin's "The Story of an Hour"
⭐⭐⭐
The Story of an Hour shows how painful it could be to be a woman in the late nineteenth century. She was married to a husband who was seemingly abusive, and there was no possible way to escape that marriage other than her husband's death. The emotion expressed in the story seems genuine, as well as the way she used spring to represent the beginning of her free life. The method that Chopin uses for revealing the protagonists character is sporadic, and she represents the feeling of being trapped rather well. However, the fact that the protagonist died at the end of the short story when she saw her husband dulled the ending, as opposed to forcing her to live with her husband and living a miserable life, which is arguably worse than death. Overall, I would give this story a three out of five stars for the emotional response it provokes as well as the unused potential that would have resulted from a slight change in the conclusion of the story.
